For the first time since the civil rights movement there is a national reckoning around race in America. More Up seeks to participate in this reckoning by finding creative ways to honor the voiceless, the minimized, the ignored. Phase I is the erection of the “Mothers of Gynecology” monument, to honor the sacrifice of Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, the enslaved experimental subjects of the so-called “father of gynecology,” J. Marion Sims.
The 15' “Mothers of Gynecology” monument will stand not far from where Sims’s experiments were conducted. The monument will act as a first step toward teaching and reimagining the true story of the nation, facing the injustice of the past and honoring the courage of overlooked heroes.
PROJECT GOALS:
-
Create a 15-foot public monument honoring Anarcha, Lucy and Betsey’s contribution to medical science
-
Convey Anarcha, Lucy and Betsey’s humanity by telling their story and giving them a voice
-
Depict the barbaric practices common under slavery
-
Provide a counter-narrative to the false history of slavery that permeates our culture
-
Transform visitors’ perspective by enabling them to walk in Anarcha, Lucy and Betsey’s shoes
-
Change current racist practices so that women of color will receive equal, high quality medical treatment
